DRONE SAINT
Description
In Drone Saint, Miss AL Simpson captures the new mythology of machine devotion — a cinematic still from her Drones of Suburbia: NYC film, Drone Driver. The work depicts a punk-futurist woman raising a drone like a relic or offering, her expression poised between reverence and rebellion. Behind her, the projected visage of another woman — perhaps a memory, perhaps an algorithmic echo — becomes both idol and observer.
Rendered in stark monochrome, the scene feels suspended in slow time — an atmosphere reminiscent of early Bill Viola, where gesture becomes ritual. The drone, once a tool of surveillance, is transformed into a symbol of female autonomy: a modern halo of control and power. The mirrored silhouettes and cinematic haze evoke both worship and resistance, suggesting a future where women reclaim the machinery that once watched them.
This still embodies Simpson’s recurring themes of control, gaze, and rebirth through technology — a sacred image for the post-human age.
